History of PITA

The UK has a long-established line of Paper Industry organisations, which started in 1872 with the inauguration of The Paper Makers’ Association of England Wales, Scotland & Ireland (PMA). The PMA discussed formation of a technical grouping as early as 1915, but it was not until the AGM of February 1920 that the proposal to form a Technical Section was proposed and ratified. To quote directly from a contemporary document:

“The basis then adopted was of the widest possible nature and was intended to secure the co-operation not only of the chemist and engineer filled with the restless spirit investigation, but also of all interested in the trade who sympathise with the scientific outlook and scientific habit of mind, whether papermakers, administrative officials or members of allied industries.”

The PMA became the British Paper & Board Makers Association (BPBMA) in 1949, then the British Paper & Board Industry Federation (BPBIF) in 1974. Meanwhile the Technical Section transformed into the Technical Division of the BPBIF in 1975, before becoming the Paper Industry Technical Association (PITA) in 1982.

PITA celebrated its Centenary in 2020 – an achievement which follows that of Zellcheming (Germany, 2005), OZEPA (Austria, 2012), PI (Finland, 2014), PTF (Norway, 2014), PAPTAC (Canada, 2015) and TAPPI (USA, 2015).

PITA Awards

The Association is proud to be able to recognise the contribution from individual members by maintaining procedures which allow an individual to be nominated for an appropriate Award. The Association has a range of Awards, and it is emphasised that they are each subject to a particular set of criteria, rather than being a ranking of achievement.

In order to maintain the status and credibility of these Awards, the Association stresses that procedures outlined in these Guide Notes must be adhered to, and that individual nominations are for contributions consistent with the aims and vision of the Association.

The Awards available include:-

Who we are

The Paper Industry Technical Association (PITA) is an independent, member-based organisation, which operates for the general benefit of its members – both individual and corporate – dedicated to promoting and improving the technical and scientific knowledge of those working in the Fibrous Forest Products Industries - such as pulp, paper, wood panel, moulded pulp and other similar industries.

It serves the Industry, both manufacturers and suppliers, by providing a forum for members to meet and network; it organises visits, conferences and training seminars that cover all aspects of papermaking science. It also publishes the prestigious internationally-recognised journal Paper Technology International ® and the PITA Annual Review, both sent free to members, and a range of other technical publications which include conference proceedings, newsletters, the electronic Papermaking! magazine, and the acclaimed Essential Guide to Aqueous Coating.

PITA plays a leading role in EUCEPA – the Liaison Committee for Pulp and Paper – and believes the UK industry is best served by taking a co-operative approach that reaches across national boundaries. For example PITA is helping pioneer international co-operation to harmonise education and training across Europe.
