The Recycling Association has developed out of the Independent Waste Paper Processors Association (IWPPA), a well-respected Trade Association previously representing independent waste paper processors and their equipment suppliers. IWPPA was formed by a group of privately owned waste paper merchants in 1975 to promote and widen the use of recyclable papers both within the UK and for export. The Recycling Association came into being in 2009 to extend Members influence to a wider range of recycling activities.

The Recycling Association however retains its trading company, The Independent Waste Paper Producers Limited (IWPPL), which the Membership of the Recycling Association has used to develop and manage long term contracts with some of the major paper, board and tissue mills within the UK. IWPPL has expanded into recovered paper export markets, shipping waste paper to Europe, America, and the Far East and is also looking at other recyclable markets on behalf of the Membership.

The Association keeps Members informed of changes to legislation and best practice covering such areas as Health and Safety, Exporting, Quality, Duty of Care, Packaging Regulations, Codes of Practice and any other matters which may potentially impact on the Membership.

The Association Membership consists of over 80 companies with a combined turnover in excess of £2 billion, and is the largest network of independent waste and recycling operators with a membership that covers the whole of the British Isles.

Over 2 million tonnes of recyclate is produced each year by Members of the Association. This feedstock for re-processors across the world saves valuable natural resources that would otherwise go to landfill and makes a substantial contribution to the United Kingdom’s balance of payments.

Member companies work closely with their local communities to promote recycling and recover a range of materials. Although the prime activity of our Members remains waste paper recovery, many Members are also involved with the recycling of many other materials such plastics, steel & aluminium cans, wood, and textiles.
