Leading by example, Ecolab manufacturing facilities around the world are making great strides in minimising water usage. Our facilities – including those in Europe – are harnessing the power of our leading-edge technologies to gain insights into our operations and ensure sustainable growth.

One example of this strategy in action is our Nalco Water manufacturing facility located in Biebesheim, Germany. This plant produces 290 products for process water, cooling systems, recycled and potable water for use in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, pulp and paper manufacturers and other industries.

For our Biebesheim facility, the ultimate goal is evolving to a minimum, or even better, zero liquid discharge (MLD/ZLD) plant through sustainable manufacturing processes. The goal was not only to reduce water use but also energy, waste, oil and gas consumption.

Our Biebesheim team installed water management technologies throughout the facility, including FLOCMASTER™, 3D TRASAR™ Technology for Cooling Water, Membranes and Boiler Applications, PURATE™ Technology and PORTA-FEED™. This comprehensive, customized approach to minimising water use and maximising operational results at our Biebesheim plant mirrors the solutions we develop for our customers.

Ralf-Jürgen Becker, Biebesheim Plant Manager, said: “Today, we are proud to say that over the last 15 years the Biebesheim plant has successfully reduced water usage by 51 percent, electricity by 56 percent, energy by 56 percent, and waste by a staggering 74 percent.”

Later this year, the addition of two new innovations, 3D TRASAR™ Technology for Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) and NALDIOX™ Technology, will lead to further reductions in resource use, making plant operations more sustainable than ever.

Well on its way toward minimum to zero liquid discharge, Biebesheim is increasingly being used to demonstrate Ecolab’s sustainability practices. Customer plant tours offer a first-hand, on-site view of how we are helping to minimise manufacturing’s water footprint.

“Biebesheim is proving to be an excellent showcase of our technology in action,” said Shane Beavers, vice president, Supply Chain, Nalco Water, Europe. “We are able to combine a highly engaged sustainability culture and our Nalco Water technologies to drive significant results.”
